Every sport has its turning point. For golf, it was the announcement of the LIV Golf Tour in 2021. Ever since coming to light, the Saudi Arabia backed-tour has rightly been a threat to the long-standing PGA Tour. With its financial benefits, the LIV Golf Tour has been successful in roping in some of the elite PGA Tour pros, including Phil Mickelson.

Similar to other players, the golfing world has also been critical of Mickelson’s decision to switch to LIV Tour. A crystal-clear glimpse of it has been visible over a couple of days, following the announcement of changes by the PGA Tour. However, dealing with criticism, the American sensation yesterday had a slight sigh of relief after receiving support from the renowned golfing instructor, Peter Kostis.
Peter Kostis comes out in support of Phil Mickelson
Ever since his announcement of moving to LIV Tour, Phil Mickelson has been the point of discussion in an ongoing Twitter battle. While a section of the golfing world has been critical of his decision, another section of fans has been backing him up. Being a part of the latter section, Kostis yesterday took to his Twitter handle, extending his support for the former World No. 2.

“Whether you like him and his approach or not, it appears that Mickelson has been proven correct about LIV forcing change on the PGA TOUR. I find it slightly ironic that those who vilified him the most are now beneficiaries of his actions. It’s a shame things got personal,” he wrote.

The need for support arose following the PGA Tour’s massive change announcements. Recently, PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan, along with Rory McIlroy, addressed a press conference. During the conference, they announced a pool of changes set to come into force from the upcoming season. In terms of Mickelson, the changes announced looked similar to the changes wanted by him prior to his move.

PGA Tour’s strategy to retain players from moving to LIV Tour
After months of debates, the PGA Tour finally made the much-awaited announcements. During the press conference, Jay Monahan, along with Rory McIlroy, announced some of the changes, which in their words, would ‘maximize the tour’s future.’

The changes ranged from improving the financial bucket for players to modifying the tour format. Also benefiting the fans, the announcement guaranteed a minimum of 20 appearances by elite players in a season. However, in all the good, the announcement that took the biggest limelight was that concerning the LIV Tour players. As per Monahan, the players who have shifted to LIV would not be allowed to re-enter the PGA Tour anytime soon.
