In South Korea, every able-bodied person is obligated to serve the national military for a period of 21 months. The entire procedure has to be completed before a person turns 35. However, all of these rules were exempt for Im.

That’s because he won the gold medal in golf at the 2023 Asian Games. SungJae Im had to undergo some basic military drills and participate in voluntary work for a few weeks. He managed to get through those three weeks of gruelling military training without any significant injuries. Announcing the same on his Instagram, the PGA Tour golfer posted a picture of himself in an army outfit.

“9th Marine Brigade 91st Marine Battalion after 3 weeks of training. Thanks to the fans who cared about me during the training camp, and many of you, I feel like I was able to finish the training without any injuries,” Im briefed on his post.

Im further pointed out how the time of his training will be significantly shorter. But he believes that despite the crunch of practice hours, his abilities would be restored in due time.
