2014 was a memorable year for Rory McIlroy. He won two major titles and a World Golf Championship title that year. It can be considered one of the most successful seasons he had throughout his career. 

While his professional life had nothing but success in 2014, such was not the case with his personal life. The golfer had a terrible breakup with his fiancée, Caroline Wozniacki, and the outcome was not good.

McIlroy’s devastated after his breakup with his fiancée

“I’m not going to lie, it’s going to be very difficult,” McIlroy said in a press meet after breaking up with his fiancée. “But you know, at least when I get inside the ropes,” he added. “I will just try and concentrate on the shot at hand.” 

McIlroy and Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki had set their wedding date in November 2014. The Irish golfer even issued an invitation card to the ceremony. However, they decided to end things after he realized he was not ready to get married and breakup with Wozniacki over a phone call. “Look, I think I’m no different than anyone else,” he said in the press meet. “Everyone has been through break-ups, and it’s obviously very, very difficult.“

It is difficult to get over someone after abruptly ending their relationship after five months of engagement. The golfer felt that the change would adversely affect his game. However, the fans didn’t have to see the sad phase of McIlroy for long as he got back to his game within no time.

After breaking up with his fiancée, McIlroy won two majors, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. Notably, with his Open, he became the third golfer after Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to claim three legs of the career grand slam at 25. The Irish golfer also won his first-ever World Golf Championship title in 2014. 

Does Rory McIlroy have a partner now? 

It has been almost 8 eight years since McIlroy broke off his engagement with Caroline Wozniacki. The 33-year-old is now a married man, and the couple even has a child together.

McIlroy married his long-time girlfriend, Erica Stoll, in 2017. Interestingly, she used to work as an office manager and the manager of championship volunteer operations for the PGA of America. She met McIlroy while working for the organization during the 2012 Ryder Cup. 

Breakups always leave hard feelings in one’s heart. The 4-time major champion once was in the same situation. Although it bothered him a lot, he didn’t give up his career because of it and became the great golfer the world now knows.
