With the 2022 year for the sport of golf filled with drama and unforeseen circumstances, it was quite evident we would have a stirring end to the 2021-22 PGA Tour season. Rory McIlroy showed up big time in the clutch to secure a win at Tour Championship.

With his big FedEx Cup win, McIlroy has broken another PGA Tour record, that was previously held by none other than himself.

Scottie Scheffler dominated most of the rounds in the FedEx Cup. This resulted in everyone beginning to calculate the 2022 Masters winner’s total prize money for the 2021-22 season. A win at East Lake Golf Course for Scheffler would have broken McIlroy’s 2019 record of $24.3 million.

However, with the Northern Irish star taking the lead late in the final round, Scheffler’s opportunity to break the record got denied.  McIlroy provided his fans with a performance worthy of making a record, which deserves to be appreciated.

Rory McIlroy breaks his own record

Being considered a rich sport, golfers enjoy a hefty winning amount with consideration of their performance. With the 2022 Tour Championship providing the winner the biggest single-day paycheck in the history of the sport, it was apparent that the Tournament winner would take home a historical cheque.

Jordan Speith held the record for most money earned in a single PGA Tour season for four years until Rory McIlroy’s 2019 season. Though Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay came close to breaking the barrier, McIlroy’s winnings remained untouchable.

Nonetheless, it took the four-time Major winner only three years to break his own record. The FedEx Cup win took Rory McIlroy’s winnings for the 2021-22 season to $28.3 million. Despite having only three wins with none including the Majors, the 33-year-old still managed to grab the throne.

Will McIlroy’s $28 million record be ever broken? The answer is probably yes. With the Tour taking further measures to increase its prize money in the upcoming season, we may as well see a new player break the record for earning the most in a single PGA Tour season each year.

With the emergence of LIV Golf, both Tours have been in a bidding war to attract golfers. Considering his earnings on the course, it’s safe to say Rory McIlroy hardly wants any of the Saudi funds.
