Rory McIlroy has taken another dig at the LIV Golf. Just days after speaking in favor of a major rule change to allow Jon Rahm to play at the 2025 Ryder Cup, the Northern Irish golfer shot a missile toward his former vice-captain, who was handed the marching orders after defecting to the breakaway league. 

McIlroy seemed to soften his stance towards the rival league, after his Ryder Cup comrade Jon Rahm joined the Greg Norman’s front, for a reported fee of $600M. However, as reports emerge of another Ryder Cupper’s imminent departure, as his recent remark shows that’s just an exception for his good friend and a playing mate – a fringe benefit not everyone can expect from the four-time Major winner.

Rory Mcilroy has no sympathy for his former captain

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Northern Irishman tweeted, “The best thing to happen to the 2023 Euro Ryder cup team was Henrik going to LIV!” Henrik Stenson, the Swedish professional, was supposed to helm the European side at first. However, his LIV switch changed the picture. DP World Tour decided to turf him out in favor of Luke Donald.

McIlroy has been a vocal critic of the breakaway league since its inception in 2022. During the Ryder Cup as well, the 34-year-old said, the LIV Golf players are going to miss the outing more than the players missing the veterans. His latest tweet evinces that he has not backed down from his staunch disapproval.

However, there are rumors that the British Pro would join the Spaniard in the breakaway league. In fact, as per reports in Spanish media, Rahm and Hatton, are set to be part of the 13th team in the fledgling league. Notably, the Spanish International, took home three crucial points from his four outings, whereas the six-time European Tour winner raked in three points from four outings.
