The world watched in wonder as Rory McIlroy completed his long-awaited career Grand Slam by defeating Justin Rose in a nerve-racking playoff match to win the 2025 Masters. It was a moment brewing for eleven years, and he is now one of the six elite golfers who have accomplished this. However, one name was noticeably missing when he acknowledged his parents and caddie while standing on the 18th green: his wife, Erica Stoll.

Last year in May, McIlroy had filed for divorce after seven years of marriage, only to revoke the petition a few days later, indicating some sort of reconciliation between the couple. Thus, concerns over the status of their relationship were raised by the stillness surrounding Erica during his victory speech. However, during a recent press conference at the Truist Championship, McIlroy provided insight into his private life and his emotional journey following the Masters.

A heartfelt homecoming: Rory McIlroy reflects on family and solitude

During the Truist Championship media conference, McIlroy gave an open interview about his time away from the spotlight after winning the Masters. “Yeah, we all went over as a family—Poppy, Erica, and I—first to see our new house there that we’ve been building for the last couple years,” he said when asked about his week following the tournament. “Then we spent the weekend in Northern Ireland. I wanted to see my folks and sort of my immediate family and Michael Bannon as well. We did that,” he further elaborated.

McIlroy emphasized the importance of privacy during this period, stating, “Look, it was amazing going home. I didn’t want any fanfare. I tried to keep it as private as possible. I just wanted to see my parents and the people that were closest to me, and we had a really nice two days.” McIlroy had intense emotion during the visit, particularly when he was reunited with his parents. “With my dad, like I never get that emotional with my dad. It was great. It was great to see him,” he continued. “Then when I saw my mom, I—yeah, we were both a mess for a few minutes.” As the only child, McIlroy highlighted his close relationship with his parents while recognizing the value of saving time spent with those you love.

McIlroy seems to have emerged from this reflective phase with a fresh sense of direction and clarity, enabling him to rediscover his origins and find comfort among the chaos of his career successes and personal struggles. Now, McIlroy is setting his sights on Quail Hollow with a clearer mindset. Let’s check out how!

Rory McIlroy embraces a new chapter post-Grand Slam

Now that he has won the Masters, McIlroy is focusing on the PGA Championship, which will take place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, a place where he has experienced success in the past. His first PGA Tour victory, achieved with a final-round 62, was at Quail Hollow. Then he clinched the Wells Fargo Championships here in 2015, 2021, and 2024. When asked about his mentality, McIlroy said, “I don’t ever want to go back to that Sunday.” He also stated a desire to move on.
