Following the European side’s second consecutive Ryder Cup victory, Rory McIlroy and Co. had a heroes’ celebration. And that’s also when they got the banter idea to send a four-word message to President Donald Trump, after winning against the home team. McIlroy, along with other teammates, were seen singing, “Are You Watching Donald Trump?” Now that Trump has replied to the banter and congratulated the team, Luke Donald has shared how it all began.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Donald was asked about the video where the European golfers are singing and whose idea it was. Talking about that, he said, “No, we were just in our dressing room after our press conference, just having a moment together with the team, and Rory was there, and he got a text from the president, while we were in there. So he read it out, and we thought, just for a little bit of banter, we’ll send a friendly video of the chant that was going around during the Ryder Cup.” In the video, Donald even shared how Trump liked the video and responded to it.

After the video went live, President Trump responded to it. He replied, writing, “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations.” The POTUS’s presence at the Ryder Cup created history as he became the first sitting US president to attend the Ryder Cup. In fact, the post has garnered over 11,000 likes and 2,500 shares, underscoring the strong bond between McIlroy and the President.

The golfer, back in 2017, played with Trump and defended the round at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. He even praised Trump as someone who is “charismatic” and “personable.” However, their relationship had a downside during the pandemic, as McIlroy spoke negatively about his leadership. Fortunately, the duo has reconciled and even played golf together in 2025.

While most of the European players were enthusiastic about Trump’s involvement, there was one golfer, however, who stepped back before the tournament due to his low interest in the president’s presence.

Before Rory McIlroy’s banter, Bob MacIntyre shared an unimpressed reaction to Trump’s presence

The golfers showcased excitement about the presence of Donald Trump, despite security concerns, but Robert MacIntyre has something different in mind. When asked about the impact of his presence, he was unimpressed. MacIntyre said, “I just play golf. I don’t — politics and stuff is out of my — I mean, I’m not bright enough, for one, to be worrying about politics. I’m worrying more about what goes on this week on the golf course.”

The Scottish pro, who was featuring in the tournament for the second time, was locked in for his performance and stayed away from all distractions. Even when shared for Trump’s presence at the tournament, it was clear that his focus was to continue his win streak. Back in 2023, he recorded zero loss. However, in the 2025 season, Bob lost his first team match with Viktor Hovland. Despite this, he still boasts a strong performance stat of 3-1-2 in two editions.

In fact, with the team making a video of a playful jab for the president, MacIntyre was not seen in the video, which was strange. What do you think would be the reason? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
