The stormy weather destroyed the four-day event at Pebble Beach. Shockingly, it turned out to be somewhat more destructive for Rory McIlroy’s illustrious career. The Northern Irishman could not play extraordinarily as he usually does to everyone’s disappointment. As a result, his bottom-half finish became a not-so-great start for his 2024 PGA Tour season.

However, what the indifferent gameplay affected the most was his OWGR point record over the last decade. Since his PGA Tour debut in 2012, McIlroy has only earned two lowest scores, one being zero and the other just being over one point more.

Rory McIlroy’s lowest point accumulation in a decade

If Jon Rahm‘s third finish at the LIV Golf Mayakoba had received any OWGR points, the Irish golfer would have lost his second-world ranking in a minute. However, LIV Golf is not that lucky, and neither has McIlroy fallen from his rank. But at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he finished way below the top 10.

Over the three rounds, the 24-time PGA Tour winner scored 71-74-69. McIlroy ended the first day with two bogeys and one double bogey. The second day brought the worst; on the par-4 4th hole, the Northern Irishman was penalized by two strokes, finishing 2 over. In the third and eventually final round, he started with a bogey but ended with a 3 under.

The overall performance put McIlroy at T66 with two others. As a result, the OWGR point he earned was the lowest for his career, except for the times when he missed the cut and received none. Nosferatu posted a tweet on X sharing the news about McIlroy gaining only 0.16507 points.

The Irish golfer surely did not have the pleasing start that he would have expected on the PGA Tour. It is remarkably opposite of what he had achieved on the DP World Tour just two weeks prior by defending his Dubai Desert Classic title. While McIlroy suffered through getting low points, two other golfers ranked improved immensely from last week.

It is evident that since Wyndham Clark won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his OWGR has improved a lot. The American golfer jumped from 10th to now being the 6th best golfer in the world. However, another golfer who received a massive boost to his rank is 24-year-old Ludvig Aberg.

The Swedish golfer had finished the third round at 5 under 65 and was a solo second. If the Pro-Am had progressed through Sunday, there was a high chance that Aberg may have clinched his second Tour victory. Nonetheless, his runner-up position earned him 51.69365 points and pushed him from being 27th to now being one step back from getting in the top 10, 11th on the rankings.

While the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was a little disappointing for McIlroy, it undoubtedly brought many other golfers joy. What are your thoughts about McIlroy’s career’s shocking stat? Let us know in the comments below!
