Rory McIlroy’s Daughter: Here’s Why She’s Named Poppy Kennedy

Choosing a name for your child is as hard as making a good golf swing. However, Rory McIlroy is good at both things and makes it look really easy. The four-time major championship winner recently revealed how he and his wife got the name for their daughter.

Becoming a father is probably one of the best feelings in the world. Maybe even better than winning four majors. Rory is among the lucky professionals who became a father. His daughter was born on 31st August 2020, just before the season-ending event on PGA Tour, the Tour Championship.

Rory and his wife Erica, who named their daughter Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, have a story behind keeping that name for her.

Rory spoke about how the couple figured out their daughter’s name back in 2021. He said, “I have a cousin of mine; her daughter is named Poppy. We know a few other Poppies. And we just really love the name. We were sort of trying to go through a lot of the flower names, Rose, Iris, all those things.”

He added, “My mom is a Rosie, so we were sort of like, ‘That might (not) work.’We know Alex Noren has an Iris. Shane Lowry has an Iris. We wanted to go with something that was pretty unique, maybe more common back where I’m from, but we landed on Poppy and we loved it, we really liked it.” What a lovely and unique name.

Who knows maybe someday we will see her play on the LPGA Tour like her father.

First major win of Rory McIlroy

McIlroy won his first major championship back in 2011, the US Open. He won the 2011 US Open with an overall score of 16-under-par, as a result, won with an eight-shot advantage. Rory carded a final round 69, two-under-par to seal the deal. The runner-up of the event was Jason Day, he ended the event with an overall score of eight-under-par.
