In the high-stakes world of the TGL, the Boston Common team, led by Rory McIlroy, found themselves out of contention for a playoff spot after a tough loss to New York GC. Despite their best efforts, McIlroy, Adam Scott, and Keegan Bradley couldn’t hold off the formidable duo of Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler. The match came down to the wire, but New York GC emerged victorious, securing their playoff spot and ending the hopes of both McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

McIlroy’s Boston Common team (0-4-1) finished the regular season without a win, while New York (2-2-1) claimed the No. 4 playoff spot. For Boston to stay in contention, they needed a dominant win over New York, but their hopes were dashed as they fell short, unable to make up enough ground in total holes won. With this result, McIlroy’s team couldn’t muster enough consistency to advance, despite battling hard throughout the season.

During the post-round presser of the match between NYGC and Boston Common Golf, Adam Scott was asked to give his view about the match last night, and the entire season. To which, he replied, “Yeah, it’s a tough one. Anytime you have a loss, it’s disappointing.” After both TGL teams tied on the second hole, Boston Common Golf claimed a point on the third by winning a Hammer. With Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, and Adam Scott on the team, they carried their momentum forward, winning the next hole and boosting their confidence.

However, New York Golf Club quickly responded, winning the next two holes and the 8th hole. Boston Common Golf managed to reclaim a point on the final hole of TGL’s Triples format by winning another Hammer for two points. From holes 10 to 15, TGL’s Match 14 shifted to a Singles format. Rory McIlroy faced New York’s Cameron Young on holes 10 and 13. McIlroy won the first match, but Young came back to win the 13th hole, keeping his team in the game. Keegan Bradley and Rickie Fowler went head-to-head on the 11th and 14th holes. The two stars drew on the 14th, but Bradley claimed the win on the 11th.

On the 12th and 15th holes, New York’s Xander Schauffele delivered an incredible performance, taking on Adam Scott and winning both holes with the help of the Hammer. Schauffele’s efforts netted his team 4 points, leading New York Golf Club to victory. Taking to this, he said, “I felt like we were a little unlucky overall on the season. I felt like we played better than our results. But that’s kind of the match-play game. That’s why this is exciting, and that’s why I think the head-to-head and the whole innovation in here really has a future.”

They have not yet given up, and are eagerly waiting to give their best for the next season. At least that’s what Rory McIlroy believes.

Rory McIlroy confesses he wants to run TGL again

During the same presser, the Northern Irishman was asked about the strategy they would put in to come back with a bang next year. The technology used in the TGL golf league has come under criticism due to tracking errors, environmental influences, and various other challenges. Despite that, he replied, I’d certainly want to run it back next year. I really enjoyed competing with these guys. But yeah, the nice thing is that Keegan and I especially live very close to here, so we can hopefully pop in whenever we want and get a little bit of extra practice going into next year.”

The TGL playoffs will begin with the semifinals on March 17 and 18, followed by the finals, a best-of-three series, starting on March 24. After that, the regular season once again begins in January 2026, so the players have enough time to practice. And he is only hoping that by January once again, the spectators will be eager to watch it. “After the next few weeks, we’ll let the major championship season kick in and obviously have people be super interested in that, but January, February, March when there’s not a ton going on at nighttime, especially up in the northeast, I think it’s a fun thing for people to be able to sit down and watch on a Monday and Tuesday night,” he added.

What a strategy indeed. Do you think the team will be able to make redemption next year? Let us know in the comments section below!
