The BMW Championship is more than just the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The pros are vying for the whooping $20 million purse and the chance to compete at East Lake to clinch the PGA Tour Champion title. However, it’s also a final chance for the golfers who are not in the top 6 of the Presidents Cup standings to qualify automatically for the patriotic showdown.

Scheduled to commence from September 24-29, there is exactly one month left before the President’s Cup starts. Recently, Nosferatu shared a post by X announcing the intricate statistics about the upcoming tournament centered around the performances of the pros like Max Homa, Tony Finau, Brian Harman, and others.

Sahith Theegala tied for 32nd after his second round, while Tony Finau sat at T29. Meanwhile, Russell Henley, Sam Burns, and Brian Harman were tied for T15 and have indirectly become a threat to Theegala’s participation in the Presidents Cup. Theegala currently holds 4,544 points in the Presidents Cup standings, with Tony Finau close behind at 4,039 points.

If Finau finishes third or better at the BMW Championship, he stands a strong chance of overtaking Theegala. Meanwhile, Russell Henley, with 3,902 points, also has a shot at automatic qualification. In a nutshell, all the golfers in the standings from 7 to 12 hold a good chance of climbing to the sixth position if they finish in the top three spots on the $20 million event.

However, there is an opposite possibility as well. If Henley and others cannot step up, they will lose their last chance to qualify automatically for the event and will have to rely on the captain’s picks which will be announced on September 3. The BMW Championship is crucial for Team USA as they will fight hard to win at Royal Montreal, but what about their opponents, Team International?

What can the International Team look like?

The criteria say the top six in standings on both sides will be locked in upon the conclusion of the second FedExCup playoff event. However, No. 8 Min Woo Lee and No. 11. Nick Taylor are not in the field, so the chances of them climbing up the ranks are nil. They will have to rely on being captain’s picks to be able to play against the American pros.

The 2024 St. Jude Championship winner. Hideki Matsuyama, who is currently on the top of the Presidents Cup standings for the international team, had to withdraw from the BMW Championship due to a back injury. If the Japanese pro’s condition doesn’t improve by the time of the tournament, he may have to forego the opportunity to play in the Presidents Cup.

Then there is Jason Day who’s currently sitting on 4th in the President Cup standings and is automatically qualified right now if nobody replaces him, the chances of which are bleak. The main race might be between Byeong Hun An and Corey Conners who are 6th and 7th on the President Cup standings. Both the pros are currently playing at the BMW Championship and their performance at the tournament will affect their President Cup standing points.
