Scottie Scheffler had a moment on the eighth hole that could’ve given a golfer an existential crisis. Having played a little inconsistently up to that point, he heavily shanked his bunker shot to the right and off the green. He had bogeyed hole 5, and now he was going to bogey hole 8. Meanwhile, Collin Morikawa was hot on his heels. Scottie Scheffler needed to get it right after hole 8 and that’s where the Jeeves to his Bertie Wooster, Ted Scott, comes in.

When asked about what the best speech Scott has given Scheffler all year, the now FedEx Champion said, “Well, in terms of freshness, I’d say probably the one after No. 8.” And, voila, after hole 8, Scottie Scheffler razed the competition to the ground with three birdies, one eagle and no bogeys. So, what were the magic words that Scott said?

Scheffler remains tight-lipped on the exact spell that Scott cast but emphasizes his appreciation for the looper and swing whisperer. “I’m not going to give away all our secrets. But Teddy has always been my biggest supporter.” He went on to say, “He has a habit of saying the right thing at the right time to kind of keep me in the right frame of mind.”
He also spoke a little about their relationship, saying that he believes he could not have had the great success that he’s had without Ted Scott and that they’ve got a great relationship. He expressed his great appreciation for the veteran bagman and called him his biggest asset on the course. But what happened on that walk after the 8th hole?

What did Ted Scott say?
Scottie Scheffler was still leading by several strokes after bogeying hole 8. He had a good start, but there was now the potential for a breakdown. That was because Collin Morikawa had been playing great these past four days and could catch up to him if Scheffler missed a beat. It was both a mental and a physical challenge for Scheffler, but Ted Scott knew just what he should say to him.
‘Teddy’ as he is affectionately called by Scheffler, may have had some soothing words on the walk from the 8 hole to the 9 tee box. Scheffler said, “Teddy did a good job of reminding me that we’re still in control of the tournament, I’m still playing great, just get out and get back to work basically is the speech he kind gave me.”

It was probably a good speech too. This win has earned Scottie Scheffler $25 million, and Scott gets 7% of that. The prize money is well earned by the pair, and maybe Scheffler owes Scott a little more than the usual 7 percent.
