Tiger Woods might be away from professional golf for some time due to his injury. But the mark he has left on the sports is beyond removable. It is so deep that even though he doesn’t play an event, he still manages to be in the limelight. The same has happened recently during the last ever WGC Match Play. The Instagram handle of Golf Digest has highlighted Woods’ record-making success. And fans reacted to it.

Tiger Woods made another record, thanks to Scottie Scheffler

Cameron Young and eventual champion Sam Burns eliminated Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler at the semi-final stage of the WCG-Dell Technologies Match Play. McIlroy then defeated world no. 1 Scheffler in the third-place playoff in Austin. Sam Burns defeated Young 6&5 in a one-sided final to earn his fifth PGA Tour title and the $3.5 million top prize. Burns had defeated Scheffler in their semifinal on the third extra hole.

After the chance of winning the WGC Match Play slipped from Scheffler’s hands, Golf Digest did not waste any time. They reposted Justin Ray’s tweet. It read, “Which defending champ Scottie Scheffler’s elimination in the semifinals, and this being the last schedule WGC, this start remains: only one player successfully defended any WGC title. Tiger Woods, 8 different times.” This is a legacy no one can surpass because there won’t be another Match Play. He is indeed the greatest.

The 44-year-old, nine-time TOUR winner never trailed on a morning in Central Texas that started with a hazy mist and ended in the sunniest of skies. He was the oldest player on the field. He won five holes in a row beginning at the fourth hole to go up by one, then defeated Kim on the par-5 12th hole where both players scored birdies. With 52 matches played, Kuchar is tied for second place all-time.
