More often than not, a controversy begins between two athletes. Many rivalries lead to beautiful competitions and take individual athletes to new heights. Some, however, turn ugly, as was the rivalry between golf legend, Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, which began after an unfortunate incident on the course. And it took a turn for the worse after a misinterpreted comment from Sergio. He took responsibility for it, tried to make amends with Woods too, and wrote him a note.

The Woods and Garcia Feud

The ugly rivalry between the two sides began early in May 2013. Sergio and Woods were both at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. During the third round, when Sergio was about to strike the ball, Tiger pulled his golf club out of his bag. This caused the whole stadium to erupt with excitement. Garcia was in the middle of his swing when this happened, and the commotion allegedly caused him to mis-hit the ball. It flew into the woods.

Ever since then, Sergio has had it out for Tiger, and Woods responded in kind. Days later, things took a turn for the worse. At the European Tour awards dinner, Steve Sands asked Garcia if he was inviting Woods to dinner during the U.S. Open. Garcia’s response left everyone in shock. He said“We will have him round every night.” We will serve fried chicken.”

The remark Sergio Garcia made came off as highly racist and offensive. He claimed to have not meant it like that. He said, “In no way was the comment meant in a racist manner,” and profusely apologized for it, saying, “I apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my comment.”

Sergio’s offensive comment at the dinner turned the whole world against him. He himself felt terrible. A month later, he tried to apologize to Woods in person but seemed to constantly miss him. “We saw each other on the range and I was hoping to meet him after the round but he was gone after the round,” he said.

The one-time major winner was deeply apologetic and hence left Tiger Woods a note in his locker. “I did leave him a handwritten note. Hopefully he can take a look at it,” he said. Sergio refused to reveal the content of the note and said, “Well, I don’t think that’s for me to say.” The 2017 Master Champion said he couldn’t take back what he said but hoped “we can all move forward.”
