Everything seems fine until the reality hits, and Sergio Garcia knows that feeling all too well. Last year, Garcia rejoined the DP World Tour after paying substantial fines over €1m for joining LIV Golf, and he’ll serve a suspension before being eligible to play. Sergio Garcia is rejoining the DP World Tour to try and make his 11th Ryder Cup appearance, which would tie the European record, and he’s had discussions with captain Luke Donald about his potential role on the team. Donald confirmed Garcia’s interest in rejoining and playing in the Ryder Cup, provided he follows the tour’s rules and regulations. And despite that, the golfer is still worried about his Ryder Cup chances.

Speaking on the latest presser at the 2025 PGA Championship, Garcia said something that has left the golf world in utter shock. “Obviously the way I’m playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no,” he said. This candid admission reflects Garcia’s current struggles, including missing the cut at the Masters and a noticeable dip in his gameplay and confidence.

Garcia’s recent performances haven’t been ideal. At LIV Golf Korea, he tied for 42nd place with a score of 2 over par. Currently, at the 2025 PGA Championship, Garcia is tied for 67th place. Despite his struggles, Garcia remains focused on improving, stating, “So obviously I need to get better.” He aims to regain his form, saying, “I need to get more where I was just before the Masters.”

By ‘before the Masters, ‘ Garcia means his amazing performance at the LIV games earlier this year. He had a strong showing at LIV Golf Riyadh, finishing T6 at 13 under par. Garcia also competed at LIV Golf Adelaide, finishing T18 at 4 under par, and secured a win at LIV Golf Hong Kong, so he is right to think that he needs to go back to that form and ace his game again.

With a couple of months until the Ryder Cup team is finalized, Garcia is optimistic about his chances, noting, “It’s as simple as that… I’ll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game.” And while Garcia can indeed use some improvement, Luke Donald’s latest comment suggests the LIV golfer is already under consideration for the big game in September.

Sergio Garcia’s Ryder Cup dreams still have some light

Luke Donald’s European team may have thrashed the US in 2023, but the Bethpage Black course is expected to throw a tougher challenge their way. Given Europe’s track record on US soil – think dramatic losses and a last win dating back to 2012’s Miracle of Medinah – it’s no surprise Donald’s eyeing experienced players for his lineup.

And Sergio Garcia, the Ryder Cup’s record points scorer, is likely high on that list. Donald’s comments ahead of the PGA Championship suggest experience will be a deciding factor: “I think I will certainly give a little bit more importance to experience… people who can step up, have had chances to win or have won Major championships.” With Garcia’s impressive history alongside Donald and his recent win at LIV Golf Hong Kong, he’s got a solid shot at making the team.

The Ryder Cup team selection drama continues, with other top golfers like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton waiting in the wings. Donald thinks Rahm’s a strong contender, saying, “In terms of Jon, he’s one of the best players in the world, and I would expect him to be on that team.” However, with sanctions and appeals still pending, nothing’s guaranteed just yet.

Garcia’s recent form and experience make him a compelling choice, but will it be enough to secure his spot on the team? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
