This week might make the impossible happen. Considering the ranking standards, this week’s American Express has the potential to create a rather peculiar situation on the global ranking front. And Jon Rahm has some thoughts on the matter. According to multiple projections, they speculate that two golfers are holding onto the top spot this time. However, it depends on how well they do at PGA West. And those two names are current number 2, Scottie Scheffler, and current number 5, Patrick Cantlay. They may move up to the top of the global rankings, or they might both achieve world No. 1 status.

The Spanish professional golfer, Rahm, expressed his displeasure with the new ranking formulas. He won the Sentry Tournament of Champions and continues to be ranked fourth in the world. However, he acknowledged that this week’s circumstance had him perplexed. The golfer also said that he had changed his mind about the ranking since Maui.

Why was Jon Rahm puzzled?

Cantlay finished runner-up at The American Express in 2021. Therefore, suppose he wins this year, he becomes the top golfer. On the other hand, Scheffler finished alone in eighth place. It will lead to a tie for the top rankings. And this will be the first time in golf history. But a question by Rahm bewildered everyone. “Seriously, that’s possible?” The Sentry winner asked with a puzzled smile.

However, there are other possible odd outcomes. Because number four golfer Rahm is also competing in The American Express. Notably, he has more events (44 total) left in the current window. A victory would not elevate him to the top spot. With only 40 tournaments remaining in the current calendar, Cantlay might pass Rory McIlroy for the top slot if he wins. The Twitter handle of Golf Central tweeted and highlighted the recent developments. They said, “World No. 4 Jon Rahm was bemused that he can’t claim world No. 1 at this week’s American Express, but No. 5 Patrick Cantlay can.”

However, the former number-one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking explained his views. According to him, once the two-year cycle is over, many changes in the global ranking will make sense because all the points accumulated before that are essentially carried over to the following process. He believes it will take longer for points to cycle out. Rahm talked about his position and said, “It’s going to take a little longer for those points to cycle out. Winning takes care of everything; if I keep playing well, keep winning, I’ll put myself in that position.”

Is the potential number-one golfer onboard?

Cantlay might win the American Express and become the number-one golfer. However, he found it amusing to share the number one position. According to him, it would be funny as it has never happened before. However, he believes that having two golfers in the number one position will be weird. It was better to have a tiebreaker and decide on only one top golfer. He joked and said, “Maybe have a putt-off or something to see who would be the real No. 1.”
