After a tough opening day at the Spanish Open 2025, Shane Lowry needed a birdie on the 18th hole to make the cut. However, his ball rolled 1 foot away from the hole, cutting his Open de España 2025 journey short. It was one of the biggest surprises to see the 2025 Ryder Cup star miss the cut. While he was not present for any press conferences, he did share his feelings in an X post after the unexpected trouble.

In his post, Lowry refered to a challenging Round 1. At the end of the round, he was 4 over par 75. This included six bogeys and two birdies. He showed real fight on day two, carding a three-under 68 to climb back into contention. Unfortunately for him, he finished just one shot outside the level-par cut line. The frustration was evident as he took to X to talk about his experience.

“Gutted to miss the cut but gave it my all today after a slow start. Great to spend a couple of days with Rahmbo & Ángel at their national open. National opens are the best, and this week in Madrid didn’t disappoint. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support. I definitely felt the love this week. 🇪🇸🇪🇺☘️,” he wrote on the X post. The post also featured three images: him, him with Jon Rahm, and him with Angel Hidalgo.

After missing the cut, Lowry made the same choice that his fellow Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy once made. He was not present at the press conference. No one even knew if he was still on the course or had left for his hotel.

While his exit did come as a surprise, it was expected that he might not be displaying his best performance to win his first Spanish Open title. Just a few days before the tournament started, an interviewer asked the 2019 Open Champion what it would take to win the Open de España 2025. “It will take some good golf. You know, I haven’t done much practice over the last few days. So I’m going to do some this afternoon. If we can get through Thursday with a decent round, you never know,” said the 6-time DP World Tour winner.

Unfortunately for Lowry, he couldn’t get through Thursday. The lack of practice could have played a major role here. Lowry has had success at this tournament previously. This was Shane’s seventh appearance at the Spanish Open. He had only missed the cut once in 2012 until now. And it’s all deja vu again. This year, the 3-time PGA Tour winner arrived in Madrid ranked 153rd in the Race to Dubai standings. An early exit now means the pressure will shift to his upcoming events.

Heightened pressure on Shane Lowry in the Race to Dubai standings

Currently, Shane Lowry sits very low in the Race to Dubai standings. The setback at the Spanish Open cost him valuable points that could have boosted his standing. Only a few tournaments are left now, and each one will carry a lot of importance for the Ryder Cup star to make it to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

After the loss at the Open de España 2025, Lowry will be next seen in India in the upcoming week. He will be playing in the inaugural 2025 DP World India Championship. Hosted at the Lodhi Course at the historic Delhi Golf Club, this $4 million tournament features many European pros. Lowry will be playing alongside Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Luke Donald, and Viktor Hovland.

Shane’s schedule post the India tour is not confirmed yet. However, he will probably play in the two DP World Tour play-off events. He will eye to make the most of the remaining events to rise in the Race to Dubai standings and win his maiden DP World Tour Championship.
