Shane Lowry has had an impressive career since he turned pro in 2009. It all began with an Irish Open in his rookie year. From there, he won 8 titles in total, including the 2019 Open Championship. But 2025 has not been that great for the World No. 25. Although he jumped 2 spots on the OWGR rankings, he has been winless this season.

The last event Lowry played in was the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. He remained winless in this event, too, as he finished T12 alongside Keita Nakajima and Richard Sterne. Reflecting on the rounds he played, the 2024 Zurich Classic winner shared an Instagram post sharing his thoughts on the first DP World Tour Play-Off event. “Played lovely this week but too many mistakes ☘️,” Lowry wrote in the caption.

Lowry is referring to his game at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, where Aaron Rai defeated Tommy Fleetwood in the playoff to emerge victorious after a tied 25 under par finish. The World No. 25 had an impressive start of 8 under par 64. He scored 9 birdies and 1 bogey in Round 1. However, things went south in the subsequent rounds.

Round 2 was the worst for him, as he finished just 3 under par despite scoring an eagle on hole 11. His extra point from the eagle was cancelled out because of the double bogey on hole 14. He teed off the ball in the water, then took a one-stroke penalty to drop it to the tee again, and eventually ended with a double bogey. Shane Lowry then completed the last two rounds with 4 under par each to complete at 19 under par.

Shane Lowry’s performance has been such throughout the year. In fact, because of the winless year, he is ranked 112 on the Race to Dubai standings. He wouldn’t even be playing in the 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship if it were not for his Ryder Cup status. Since Lowry was part of the European team, he got a free pass, just like Ludvig Aberg. Sepp Straka also planned to take advantage of this, but he withdrew from both DP World Tour Play-Off events because of a family emergency.

The last time Shane Lowry won was at the 2024 Zurich Classic in April. He was playing with Rory McIlroy. The duo defeated Ramey and Trainer in the playoff. This means that Lowry has not won an event in over a year now. The 2022 BMW PGA Championship came close a few times this season. He was a runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Truist Championship on the PGA Tour. Besides these, he tied for 3rd position at the DP World India Championship. However, he was never in the mix to win in any other events on either tour.

But it’s not all over for the Ryder Cup star. Despite the poor form and frustration, Shane Lowry has shown signs of progress.

Shane Lowry shows signs of progress

Lowry has shown strong metrics in strokes gained tee-to-green in recent tournaments. He has even ranked in the top 10 in this category. According to the PGA Tour data, Lowry’s strokes gained tee-to-green were 0.733 in 2024. He was ranked 22 overall. From there, he increased it to 0.892 in 2025 and currently ranks 15th overall. This indicates his ball-striking and approach game are very solid, even if the results aren’t fully materializing yet.

The same goes for strokes gained as well. After ranking 40th with 0.657 in 2024, he improved to 22nd with 0.769 this season. This shows that he is still on the path to improvement and may win a title soon. His scoring averages across recent events demonstrate relative consistency. Shane Lowry often finishes rounds under par and maintains a competitive position. However, the challenge remains in converting this into closing rounds and wins.
