Angelo Argea spent two decades caddying for Jack Nicklaus and rose to fame among caddies. Angelo passed away from liver cancer at the age of 75 in 2005. It was a sad day for the caddie community. However, it was a tragic day for the legendary golfer. Argea used to drive a taxi in Las Vegas before caddying for the pro. But when the opportunity presented itself, he took it immediately.

We know that Nicklaus was an outstanding golfer and a big-hearted man. He understood every parent’s pain when he felt the terror of losing his daughter. Therefore, he, along with his wife Barbara, founded a charity hospital for underprivileged children. And his humane nature was evident when he spoke about his 20-year-long partnership with Argea, post his sad demise.

Why was Angelo Argea a family member for Jack Nicklaus? 

After the demise of his long-time caddie, Nicklaus shared his ordeals. He talked to Associated Press and said, “He had friends everywhere. In many ways, Angelo was part of our family, and Barbara and I will miss him greatly.” The greatest golfer further talked about his time with Argea and said, “I asked him if he wanted to caddie for me in the Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas, and we ended up winning that one.”

The Nicklaus-Argea duo won roughly 40 titles, including the PGA Championship, British Open, and U.S. Open. However, Augusta National did not allow players to bring their caddies until 1983. However, the late caddie was known for many things, but Nicklaus wanted more for him.

According to the winner of 117 tournaments, Argea was a dedicated caddie, and his hard work was appreciated in more ways than other. He said, “Angelo was known for his … gray afro, but he should also be known for being an excellent caddie.” Nicklaus then explained how his former caddie used to get pins early in the morning before every tournament. He had excellent knowledge of every golf course. Also, he was well acquainted with Nicklaus’ game. Therefore, it always came in handy for the legendary golfer. Argeo always had solutions to everything on the golf course.
