The 1991 PGA Championship winner, John Daly is known to wear colorful and unique golf apparel to the tournaments. Yet, the pink trousers he wore to the final round of the 2009 BMW PGA Championship made headlines since he wore them to support his good friends, not to make a fashion statement!

Phil Mickelson announced he would take an indefinite break from golf a week before the BMW event to be with his wife, Amy Mickelson. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and was expected to have surgery within two weeks. And as the loving and caring husband he is, the golfer wanted to be by her side throughout the treatment. 

As a fellow golfer and a good friend, Daly wanted to show his support to Mickelson and his wife. And he chose to wear pink trousers as the color represents breast cancer. “I had a pair, so I figured I’d do that for her today,” he said about the trousers. “I thought it would be a good gesture.”

John Daly explained his relationship with Phil Mickelson and his wife

Even though John Daly turned professional in 1987, he joined the PGA Tour in 1991, whereas Mickelson joined in 1992. As golfers who joined the Tour around the same time, the two have played several tournaments together, and maintained a good relationship with each other. 

“I know Phil very well,” the two-time major champion said. “And I know Amy.” Amy Mickelson has always tried to be with her husband whenever he is competing. Therefore, Daly and other golfers know her well. “She’s a great lady,” he said about her. “She has always been a sweetheart to everybody.”

Other than wearing pink as a nice gesture, he wanted to reach out to Mickelson. However, Daly instead sent him and his wife a media message as he didn’t want to bother them in their troubled times.

Married in 1996, Phil Mickelson and his wife were enjoying their 13 years of marriage when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While a disease like cancer often causes trouble between people, Phil and Amy Mickelson stood together and fought back. 

He even took a long break from the sport to stay by her side, despite being the world’s no. 2 golfer at the time. Nevertheless, after 11 months of chemotherapy and other treatments, the golfer’s wife beat cancer! 

John Daly wore pink to spread breast cancer awareness and support his friend’s wife. He proved through his sweet gesture that he indeed is a good friend of Mickelson and thinks highly of Amy Mickelson.
