LIV Golf has been in the news for a while now, and along with-it attention is being drawn to its CEO, Greg Norman. Before becoming the CEO of the Saudi Backed League, Greg was a legendary golfer. He ranked at number 1 from 1986 for more than 2 years straight. Right up till 1998, Greg continued to rank in the top 10, often moving into the number one position.

Greg Norman earned the nickname: The Great White Shark
Norman turned pro in 1976, and a year later he joined the European Tour. Norman spent 6 years on the European tour. He had a total of 17 victories there. In 1983 Greg Norman moved to the PGA Tour. In the PGA Tour Greg went on to win 20 events including two majors.

The Australian Golfer got his name the Great White Shark after his performance in the 1981 Masters in Augusta. After the second round, Norman was leading, and when interviewed he said, “I grew up in Queensland, Australia. I grew up on the Great Barrier Reef. I’ve dived with sharks. And that was what I just did as a kid.” The next day a newspaper called him “The Great White Shark.” And the name stuck.

The Shark is often called an underachiever because with his talent a lot more was expected of him. He came close to winning many major tournaments, only to lose out by a few strokes. His brilliance reflected in the world rankings, where he spent a total of 331 weeks at number one over the two decades.
Norman’s letter to his younger self
In 2015, Norman wrote a letter to his younger self with the Players’ Tribune. He goes on to tell his younger self about going about his way and living his life exactly how he used to. He tells him to shock the world with the lead for a while in his first Masters, and then “take some time to go down to the media room to introduce yourself.”

Greg Norman then goes on to say that the nickname he’ll get will go on to define his future. Greg refers to how the iconic shark logo he got from his nickname grows to be the trademark of his flourishing business. “Maybe that nickname will sprout a logo that you’ll retain the rights to. And maybe that logo will launch a brand that you’re remembered by,” he said.

He also goes on to give his 14-year-old self business advice and said that kindness and all positive interactions with others would always pay off. “That leads me to my best piece of business advice for you: Treat people well. Every interaction is an opportunity, and nothing bad can come from a positive one.”
