LIV Golf makes cut-throat changes

When the LIV Golf’s inaugural season happened last year, its executives called it a beta year. Their plan was to start big from the year 2023 by calling 2023 Year 1. However, things did not happen as planned due to the LIV Golf’s accelerated timeline. LIV’s original plan was to hold ten tournaments in the year 2023, and introduce a schedule of 14 events containing a fully baked-out team component in 2024. However, this plan has changed already as LIV Golf executives have decided to hold the 14 events in 2023 itself rather than waiting till 2024. Not only have they changed the course of the season, but other things too. The changes involve the players, franchises and Saudi Arabian executives too.

The changes planned by the rival Tour include team franchises up for sale next year at 9 figures, and the winnings of a player will no longer go directly to players only but will go to the team franchise. Also, LIV has decided that it will no longer pay for the team travel expenses and the teams have to pay themselves!

LIV Golf’s thinking and the reactions that followed

The beta test season of 2022 was regarded as a monumental success, based on the buzz created by the breakaway league. What the LIV series needed was more competition, more advanced tournaments and better management. However, that did not happen, and the pains are growing for the tour. Added to these pains are the responses from players and franchises to the changes proposed by the league executives. As soon as the news of these changes broke out, fans did not hold back and let their views out. Here are some of the fan reactions:

The 2022 season was a success fairly because of the hype the league created. To its addition, the success was about the macro stories and not the competition, and the subsequent signing of so many Hall of Famers, Ryder Cup stars, major champions and U.S. Amateur winners. What happens moving forward remains to be seen.
