‘Such a Joke’: Golf World Lashes Out at PGA Tour Over Its Latest Amendment for Players

The PGA Tour has revamped its rules and regulations to counter the threat confronted by the LIV Golf Series. Among the plethora of changes, the compulsion to play a minimum of 13 elevated events created quite a buzz. However, in a surprising turnaround, the Tour has allowed contracted players to skip one elevated event “for personal or professional reasons only”.

The statement drew reactions from netizens, who felt the constant chopping and changing of rules was hurting the sport.

PGA Tour allows players to bypass one elevated event

A few months since the new directive was in place, the PGA Tour made some amendments in light of the player’s obligations. A portion of the new guideline stated that the PGA Tour Policy Board has voted to allow players to skip one elevated event owing to personal or professional reasons.

Furthermore, the board had made another exemption for the players’ participation. It stated that involvement in a fall event could count as one of the three optional starts alongside the thirteen elevated events.

The new rules will come as a much-needed relief for golfers, who prospected to play around 20 events in total within a span of 34 weeks. Following the thirteen elevated events, golfers are expected to take part in three PGA Tour events of their choice. Add the indispensable four Major Championships and golfers around the world are bemoaning their schedule.

However, the fickleness of the board has left fans questioning the higher authority and their decisions. Here’s a selection of those tweets.

Is a one-event break enough to warrant a ruling?

While the expulsion to participate in one elevated event is noteworthy, was it worth passing the guidelines? According to the PGA, golfers who don’t apprehend the rule and play the designated events will be “limited to the bonus distribution for the Player Impact Program”.

But the rules remain unclear in the case of injuries. Will an injury rob a golfer off his share?
