The Players Championship, known for bringing together the world’s top players, is no longer the only tournament that does so. Thanks to the PGA Tour’s “designated events” earlier in the year, such as the WM Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational, we’ve already seen thrilling competitions featuring top players. Moreover, the world rankings have already been shaken up!

But don’t fret, the 49th running of the Players Championship is here and it promises to be nothing short of epic! As the PGA Tour’s flagship event, it’s the tournament to watch. The first two rounds at TPC Sawgrass in Florida will see Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm grouped, making for an exciting showdown. Who will come out on top and secure the coveted top spot in the rankings? The anticipation is palpable! The tension between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been rising exponentially. In a recent press conference ahead of the unofficial 5th major, the 26-year-old expressed his opinion on the speculations that PGA Tour needs a villain to increase its popularity.
Scottie thinks it might be possible from a business point of view. However, he does not believe in the same. “When you talk about the villain, maybe, from a business perspective, I’m not really sure, but that’s not for me.”

Moreover he expressed that he prefers to focus on playing golf and let his performance do the talking rather than engaging in spats with other players. “For me it’s always best to just try and go out there and just play golf and go from there. I don’t look to make a lot of noise with my mouth.”

The 5-time PGA Tour winner wants to be recognized for his accomplishments in the sport and not for being involved in a fight with fellow golfers. Furthermore, he believes such fights are just a distraction and he prefers to let his clubs do the talking.

Competition is going to be very tough at TPC Sawgrass

Expect an exhilarating start to the tournament as McIlroy, the 2019 champion from Northern Ireland, arrives in top-notch form after finishing as the runner-up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. And then there is Scheffler, who secured a joint fourth position at Bay Hill. And Rahm, who started strong but couldn’t maintain his performance and recorded his worst finish since the Scottish Open in July last year.

And to up the stakes of winning even more the prize pool for this year’s championship stands at a whopping $25 million, with the winner set to earn a staggering $4.5 million (£3.75 million).
