Talor Gooch’s ‘major’ agony has finally come to an end. After his voice and pleas went unheard during the Masters and his wound went unnoticed when he saw a relatively younger pro winning the invite to the PGA Championship, the PGA came to his rescue. He has been endowed with a special invitation to the second major of the season.

Even though many LIV Golfers were left out of the loop of said invitations, Gooch has finally been saved from falling into a similar destiny. Looking forward to Valhalla next week! Thank you for the invitation, @PGA See y’all there,” wrote the delighted pro-golfer on X. In a time when the agony of the LIV golfer’s increasing inability to break into the major championships increases, Gooch’s wait-and-watch method, coupled with his activism in favor of getting the best talent to the major’s stage seems to be working well in his favor.

Previously, Gooch said about Rory McIlroy‘s potential win at the Masters, “If [Rory] McIlroy goes and completes his Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.” With his remarks, he hinted that without LIV golfers, the win at majors is incomplete because, in a way, the field is incomplete as well.

However, in his hopes for change, Gooch was not out of touch with reality. After his Masters snub, he said, “I think the majors have kind of shown that they’re not getting on board with LIV. So hopefully the day will come when the majors decide to start rewarding good play on LIV. Hopefully, that’ll be sooner than later.” As it turns out, maybe Gooch’s pleas for rewarding some good play have been answered during the second major of the event.

However, with time, making their way into the majors will only get tougher for LIV golfers if the impending $3 billion merger continues to linger. Why? Well, because Greg Norman withdrew his application from OWGR after it was rejected for not having an appropriate format. So what is the approach the 2023 Individual Champion of the Saudi-backed league is trying to stick to for the future?

Will Gooch’s obsession with ’67’ be his respite at the PGA Championship?

After his initial disappointment with the Masters, Gooch chose to focus on what he knows best, which in his case was “good golf.” However, this strategy rooted in perseverance and undying consistency seems to have enlightened his way through the special invitation. “I’m going to keep doing what I did last year. Even though it didn’t work, I’m going to keep trying to shoot good scores,” said Gooch when asked about his approach.

Despite preliminary failures, Gooch continues his perseverant mindset into the days to come in his life as a professional. Interestingly, it is the 67-score theory that the pro golfer firmly trusts. He mentioned during LIV Golf Miami, “The rule of 67 worked today, and I’m going to keep trying to shoot as many 67s as I can, and eventually all of that will take care of itself.”

It remains to be seen whether the ’67’ strategy will finally come to the 32-year-old’s rescue during the PGA Championship, or will it remain another unfulfilled dream? Meanwhile, another LIV golfer, David Puig, has also received an invitation to play at Valhalla. Do you think a LIV golfer will be able to win just like last year?
