On a big stage like the 2023 US Open, one cannot pull off a victory alone. Behind the scenes, there are a number of people rooting for you and supporting you who wish to see you at the top. Something similar is the case with the champion of the third golf major of the season. Wyndham Clark, who clinched his first major victory at LACC on Sunday, reflected raw emotions.

Post-tournament, Clark mentioned one person whose hand was behind his triumph—an individual from whom the golfer has received unconditional support. Irrespective of the outcome of the game, this person always looked out for Clark. It was none other than his mom! His heartwarming message attracted the attention of golf fans, who couldn’t help but be touched by the gesture.

The debutant North Course on its finale welcomed Wyndham Clark as the 2023 US Open winner at 10 under par, one shot ahead of Rory McIlroy. The victory in itself was pretty special, as it was Clark’s first major triumph. However, even more distinctive were his emotions after the win.

As Clark took the mic, he did not forget to mention his mother, who has been the golfer’s constant cheerleader even before he had made a name for himself. The PGA Tour also recognized the intensity behind these feelings and tweeted, “This one is for Mom“. It made absolute sense too, since Lisa Clark, Wyndham’s mom, had always positively believed in her son. According to the 29-year-old, his mom would say, ‘That is right where my Wyndham belongs‘.

The golfer did exactly that! His mother, through these words, implied that one should have a bigger purpose to play for than oneself. And Clark definitely fulfilled this criterion as he dedicated the win to his mom! Sadly, the star’s mother passed away in 2013 due to breast cancer.

Even though she could not have been present in person to see his son inscribe his name on the trophy, she sure must be proud of Clark. The golfer summed up his reason for the win in a sentence. “I just felt like my mom was watching over me today,” Clark said. “She can’t be here. Miss you, Mom.” The intensity of these emotions got to the fans, and they chimed in to show their love and support.
