“Rory and Bryson, who seemingly get more and more bad blood by the day,” said CBS golf anchor Joe Musso, referencing the strained relationship between Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau after the Masters drama. This tension was evident after DeChambeau didn’t mention McIlroy when discussing players performing well recently.
At the LIV Golf Korea, DeChambeau left McIlroy’s name out when mentioning other top players, instead highlighting Scottie Scheffler’s great run, Joaquin Niemann’s strong performance, and Jon Rahm’s recent play. Now, the plot thickens.
Speaking on the latest presser at the PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy was asked about the dynamic between him and Bryson DeChambeau during the first major, and well, it’s safe to say he didn’t hold back. “I don’t know what he was expecting,” McIlroy said, referring to DeChambeau’s comments where he called out the PGA Tour pro for not ‘talking’ to him the whole time they were playing.

“We’re trying to win the Masters. I’m not going to try to be his best mate out there. Look, everyone approaches the game different ways. Yeah, like I was focused on myself and what I needed to do. That’s really all that it was. It wasn’t anything against him or against — it’s just I felt that’s what I needed to do to try to get the best out of myself that day.”
Well, this isn’t the first time McIlroy has shed light on the reason behind his action—or lack thereof—during the final round. McIlroy explained to CBS’s Amanda Balionis that he focuses on his own game, staying in his “own little world” and “cocoon” to block out distractions, including potential mind games from DeChambeau. “He’ll do what he does,” McIlroy said, “and I just have to stay firm and just stay in my own little world.” This approach seems to have worked, given his win, making it hard to argue with his strategy.

And yet, even after all that went down, DeChambeau is ready to do it all over again at Quail Hollow this week.
