Usually, players had to seek training from professional trainers but lucky for Xander, he doesn’t have to seek far. Xander’s father Stefan Schauffele, is and always has been his swing coach. An inspiring Olympic decathlete in his prime years, Stefan has been coaching golf moves to his son from a very young age. Guiding him throughout his career, Stefan has always been Xander’s coach. And senior Schauffele was also present at the LACC during the first round when he saw his son making this historic record.

Stefan was a proud papa bear, and after the event in an interview given to Golf.com said very wise words about Xander and the game. When the reporter asked him how much credit did he get for Xander’s performance, Stefan replied very smartly “You know, he is my son and that’s probably where it ends.”

The reporter then further asked, “Obviously, it’s a tournament record but you guys don’t get excited about much very easily.” And Stefan gave a very logical reply to this. “Well because, not right. I mean it’s wonderful that he took full advantage and so did Rickie. And that’s great. I think what he said you know that it was nice to have somebody to chase or it’s probably really important, right? Because otherwise you might, it might creep into your head and you may play a little bit too safe. But other than that, the 62s, two 62s is just a sign that the course was set up easy and was very gettable. And I’m sure that will change.”

Stefan is proud yet a bit critical of Xander

Stefan took the opportunity to not just talk well about his son’s record but also acknowledge Fowler’s hard work. He did not, however, extend full credit to Xander, rather implied that the setting of the course aided. Just like every teenager, Xander also went through a rebel phase where he objected to his father’s golf teachings. But after he grew up he realized what his father did was for the best.

Whether he wins or loses the tournament is a different matter, but with eight birdies without a bogey and a 27-foot birdie putt at the final hole, Xander will be remembered long for this historic achievement.
