However, Woods’ son’s relation to golf began the moment he was named Charlie. Let’s take a look at the emotional reason why the Hall of Famer gave his son the notable name.

Why did Tiger Woods name his son Charlie?

The name Charlie Axel Woods honors both the father of Woods’ ex-wife, Elin Nordegren and a guy who Woods regarded as being similar to his grandfather. Nordegren’s male family members commonly kept the middle name, Axel.

Elin’s father as well as his brother have a similar middle name, Axel. However, when it came to the 13-year-old’s first name, Tiger Woods chose it to be Charlie, similar to Charlie Sifford. He was the first African American to compete in the PGA Tour.

Woods considered Sifford to be his idol and motivation to become a professional golfer. Before turning pro in 1996, Charlie Sifford encouraged and mentored a young Tiger and acted as an important figure in his life. The 15-time Major winner felt Sifford had the same traits as his grandfather, and also referred to him as ‘Grandpa’.

Now years later, a 13-year-old Charlie Woods is also following in the footsteps of his father and the man he is named after to turn a professional golfer. He has already won many hearts with his impressive golf skills at the recent PNC Championship. Sifford passed away in 2015. However, Charlie Woods will carry on his legacy with plenty to achieve in the sport of golf.
