The Next Two-Sport Athlete? Retired NFL Star One Step Away From Playing the U.S. Open

A former New England Patriots running back to play at the 2022 U. S. Open? Although it might sound impossible, there is only one good round separating the retired NFL running back from playing in the third major of the season! 

Nicknamed Woody, Danny Woodhead has always been a huge fan of golf. Since he is fond of the sport, he didn’t waste any time pursuing his hobby as a job soon after he retired as the RB of the Baltimore Ravens. And it seems that his hard work finally paid off as he is only one round away from playing at a major event in golf.

The USGA informed the wonderful news to golf world through their official Twitter page. 

Danny Woodhead retired from his career as a running back in NFL after completing 10 seasons. Born in 1985, Woody was drafted by the New York Jets in 2009. Later, he served as the RB for the New England Patriots for three seasons, the San Diego Chargers for 4 seasons, and finally the Ravens for one season.

Even when he was an active player in the NFL, Woodhead had considered golfing his favorite hobby to relax. And he has now qualified at the local qualifier round for the U. S. Open. He still needs to perform well in the final qualifying round to be included in the final field. 

The 2022 U. S. Open 

The third major of the golf will begin on June 16, 2022. The 122nd U.S. Open will be held at the Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts.

Presently, the local qualifying rounds are being held at different sites, recognized by the USGA. The local qualifying rounds will continue until May 23, as per the official website. Furthermore, the qualified golfers from the local sites will play in the final qualifying rounds, which will be held between May 23 to June 6.

The final field of the major is still not decided yet. However, few players are exempted to play at the event, according to the rules of the USGA. Players like Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Collin Morikawa are part of the exemption list curated by the USGA. 

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are also part of the USGA’s exemption list. Furthermore, they have even registered to be part of the field.

Danny Woodhead has always been a fan of golf. And he will be playing with legendary players like Woods and Mickelson if he makes it after the final qualifying round.
