‘The Worst Mistake I Ever Made Was…’: Marred by Controversies, John Daly Emotionally Confessed His Biggest Regret in 2007

All his fans love two-time Claret Jug winner John Daly. Fans know him for his unique dressing style and attitude to have fun whenever possible. Viewers have seen him drunk, and his gambling addiction was causing chaos in his personal and professional life. But despite being a raging alcoholic, it is not something that Daly regrets.

He said losing huge deals with sponsors and being addicted to alcohol or gambling was not the setback. The biggest mistake he made was something one would have never expected. When everyone thought that one of the finest golfers was squandering his talent, a report from 2007 shook everyone.

An old conversation with Tom Chiarella was published, which revealed the truth of his mistake. 

Was John Daly out of hands?

In the report, Tom Chiarella revealed the fact about the mistakes. According to Daly, drinking alcohol and gambling was never a mistake. The biggest blunder he made was accepting that he was an alcoholic. He said, “The worst mistake I ever made was admitting that I was an alcoholic.”

Daly said he was not the one, but accepting he was an alcoholic gave all the powers to the authorities. He lost the CALAWAY deal.

He added that since he gave all the power to others, he had to work according to them. Because if he did not, then everybody would have written him off. Daly never wanted to be in rehab; he never liked it there. Anyone who knows about rehab knows that some specific rules and regulations must be followed. 

Denial is what Daly wanted to go for. However, after losing a vast sponsor deal and his dropping performance, Calaway asked him to join the rehab. Despite all expenses paid, he refused to be in recovery and lost the Calaway deal.

Did Daly have alcohol poisoning?

In March 1997, Daly had big hopes for the Players Championship in Florida. However, it did not go according to plan, and he ended up playing a bad round at the TPC Sawgrass Golf Course.

After the disappointment, he returned to his hotel room and drank alcohol. He was found unconscious, taken to the hospital, and diagnosed with alcohol poisoning. People were sympathetic to his suffering.
