Caddies play a crucial role not just in golf but even in the lives of the players. They are the back-end support of a successful golfer. And in some lucky cases like that of Phil Mickelson, they even become family. Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay had been Mickelson’s caddie for 25 long years, and their bond was more than just a professional one.

Talking about what caddie, Jim Mackay meant to them, Amy Mickelson said, “There aren’t really words to describe what he means not just to Phil but to our family.” Mackay had been a true caddie to Phil, his tears at Phil’s victory at the British Open championship proves his honesty and true faith in Mickelson.

2013 was going as a dry spell for Phil Mickelson, until the arrival of the British Open championship. The championship came as a blessing in disguise for the former no. 2 player. He registered his long awaited win by scoring the last of his six birdie putts. And suddenly the air around got all teary and emotional. The duo of Mickelson and Mackay could not help but sob with happy tears. Mackay just couldn’t curtail his tears on the long-awaited victory of his partner.

Mackay, later that day said, “You work for a guy for 21 years, it’s pretty cool when you see him playing the best round of golf you’ve ever seen him play in the last round to win the British Open.”  If an article of the New York Times is to be believed, working as a duo, Mackay gave Mickelson a target, right before his win. During his interview, Mackay said that when he told Mickelson that even par or one under could win this thing. Mickelson said, ” I’m going to be better than that.

Phil and Bones still rolls off the tongue like one single continuous word. They have together seen the debut of several new players and retirements of many. The duo has had the most innocuous journey ever. They have seen the lows and the highs of Phil’s journey since 1992.

The duo before parting ways completed more than 600 events, claimed five major championships and won about 46 official titles world wide. Bones had a major hand behind the success of Phil and his inclusion in golf’s hall of fame. And if a Hall of Fame was to be created for caddies, Jim Mackay would be the first one to be honored.

According to a press release made by Phil Mickelson, “After 25 very rewarding and memorable years, Bones and I have mutually decided to end our player-caddie relationship.” The whole of golf community was in shock when they heard that the duo had decided to part ways. It felt nothing shot of a break-up. Undoubtedly, Bones is the kind of caddie that ever golfer wants. If Phil’s words are to be trusted, then he is one of the most knowledgeable and dedicated caddies in the world.
