John Daly is a legendary golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. The man is known for his brutally honest nature and his non-country club appearance. Daly is more famous for his colorful pants than his skills on the course.

Daly recently opened up about his life in his appearance in his ESPN “30 for 30” episode. The show included lots of incidents from Daly’s life and he talked about various ups and downs he faced. Daly also talked about the times when he decided to end his life.

John Daly talks about a rough time in his life

Suicidal thoughts are never the right frame of mind to be for a person, but Daly faced a lot more than just thinking about ending his life. Daly mentioned two occasions where he almost decided to quit on life. The first time it occurred to him was in 1997 and it involved pro golfer Fuzzy Zoeller. The golf ace was taken in an ambulance after a night of binge drinking. Zoeller asked Daly if everything was okay, but Daly replied in frustration, “Why don’t you grab that cop’s gun and just f***ing kill me?”.

In the same year, a more frightening event took place when Daly drove to the edge of a cliff alone in his Mercedes in California. The golfer called an old friend – Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson, and told him, “I’m on a mountaintop. … There will be no more John Daly tomorrow.”. Scared and highly confused, Henderson began to cry and made a last attempt to try and stop Daly from taking his own life. He said to Daly, “John, will you do me a favor? I’ve never asked you to do anything for me. Go home.”.

Henderson’s desperate attempt worked and he saved Daly’s life. Daly returned home alive after hearing the right thing from his friend. Hadn’t it been for Henderson, we would have lost a wonderful man 25 years back. The powerful story of Daly being saved twice from suicidal thoughts is inspiring looking at how well Daly has done with his career after the tragic times. Not only do these incidents teach us how mental health affects players and their lives, but how necessary it is to focus on them and talk about it more voraciously .
