Tiger Woods was encouraged by his good friend, Fred Couples’ PGA Tour Champions’ triumph in October. As a result, he joked about switching to a yellow golf ball when returning to golf after his near-fatal accident last year.

Even though he was away from the action, the pro golfer was keeping up with the latest in golf. The close pal, Couples, shot a scorching 12-under a round of 60 to win the PGA Tour Champions SAS Championship. The accident in February 2021 did not dim his enthusiasm for golf or his friends playing the sport.

However, the major championship winner recently attended the first edition of Bridgestone’s “Another Golf Podcast.” He discussed several topics, including the golf skill he finds challenging. Yes, the greatest golfer of all time has weaknesses too. However, the pro further talked about his connection with Fred Couples. Woods re-lived the moment when he was glued to the television. Couples earned his 14th career victory by winning the SAS Championship on the PGA Tour Champions in October.

Why were Tiger Woods and Couples close?

Woods loved the victory because it was a first for Couples after a long time, and he wanted to be part of the proud moment. The pro said Couples had played a crucial role in his life. The golfer joined Couples and Ray Floyd for Woods’ first practice round at Augusta National.

According to the PGA pro, Fred is one of the most special bonds he has, and he was blessed to have him. “I’ve been lucky enough to have him as basically my dad on Tour,” said Woods. Suddenly, he became his friend on Tour when the pro first came out, and Couples took Woods under his wing. It was the 1997 Ryder Cup; since the duo got together, he used to play every practice round at Augusta with either [Mark] O’Meara or Fred for all the coming years. “And then it’s been Fred pretty much, I think, the last 15 years,” said Woods.

Many people have revealed that Woods likes being alone. Even the golfer himself has accepted that he is a ‘lone wolf.’ When he first joined the Tour at 20, he preferred no one’s company. However, Couples was there for Woods during practice sessions and roadside dinners, and Woods appreciated that.
