Tiger Woods is not the one to back down. So, despite the roof dome collapse of SoFi Center, the venue for his dream project, TGL, Woods is steadfast in resolving the issue. The calamity postponed TGL’s ESPN debut to next year. Woods wants to avoid another hitch like this. That is why TMRW Sports has made massive investments in rebuilding the structure.

Mike McCarley, TMRW Sports co-founder and former NBC executive, has already met Palm Beach State College’s board of trustees in February. However, his previous proposal was met with some resistance from the board. This time, there appears to be some positive development.

TGL is set to have a safer and stronger venue

Josh Carpenter at the Sports Business Journal reported that TMRW Sports is set to build a sturdier structure with insulated steel walls and a steel-supported roof. Interestingly, the dimensions and the sitting capacity will remain the same, at 250,000 sq. ft. and 150,000 sqft. An earlier presentation of the building proposed a height of 74 feet, 10 inches, as opposed to the 79-foot dome.

The newly erected structure will be able to withstand a category 5 hurricane, whereas the earlier structure could withhold only a category 4 hurricane. A category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale has a wind speed of above 156 mph per hour. Surprisingly, the board members were not on board at first.

Replacing the dome with steel meant that TMRW Sports wouldn’t be able to return the site to its original shape after the 15-year lease. That’s also why McCarley has furthered a proposal to amend the agreement. There will be two special meetings on March 12 and March 15. The construction will only start after board approval.

A TMRW Sports spokesperson said, “Our aim is to create a venue that the College and Palm Beach communities, as well as our fans and partners, will enjoy visiting for years to come. This is part of the process, and we are appreciative of both our wide-ranging partnership with Palm Beach State College and their agreement to create a special March meeting date ahead of their regularly scheduled meeting on April 16.” The SoFi center upgrade is part of a broader plan that TGL has already undertaken.

What else do we know about the futuristic league?

Sports Business Journal reported that the TGL has opened a performance lab in the last month. The lab features a 60×30, 1,800 Sq. ft. screen, compared to SoFi Center’s screen dimension of 3,000 Sq. ft. Players can also practice on similar grass that will be used in the venue. The initial budget of $11M could increase fourfold to $50M per college report. Add to that another $30 million that is earmarked for creating the indoor golf course.

As part of the initial lease agreement, NexGen Sports Group, the parent company of TMRW Sports, doesn’t pay any rental fees to the college. Instead, they made a $1 million donation to the Foundation for Palm Beach State College. Additionally, they also gave the students training opportunities and agreed to share the use of the facility. Tiger Woods owns his team, Jupiter Links GC, along with David Blitzer. The veteran golfer is also the captain of the six-man squad.
