Tiger Woods Once Coined a Unique Term to Describe His Ethnicity to the World

Tiger Woods was 21 when he won the 1997 Masters. Winning a major at a young age was indeed an incredible achievement. However, Woods was the first African-American to do so, and the record was more than what a young man could take in. 

Although the new title and the responsibilities that came with it were too much for the young golfer, Tiger didn’t hesitate to identify his true self. When Oprah Winfrey asked him about his ethnicity, Woods had the perfect answer to give.

“Growing up, I came up with this name: I’m a ‘Cablinasian,'” he said.

Tiger appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show soon after his win at the Masters in 1997. The golfer was young; however, he had clear knowledge about his true self.

Tiger and Oprah talked about different things while on the show. They discussed his controversial Nike ad, his relationship with media, and his ethnicity as well.

Woods added that he came up with the term “Cablinasian” to identify himself. He explained that he is a mix of different racial heritage. Tiger’s father, Earl, was part of African-American, Chinese, and Native-American ethnicities. However, his mother, Kutilda, is of Asian descent.

Woods further added that the term means the mix of Caucasian, black, Indian, and Asian. Since he was birthed and raised by people of different ethnicities, Tiger identifies himself as a mix of his parents. Notably, ahead of his answer, Oprah titled him as ‘America’s son’, a term that received loud applause from the studio audience.

Sadly, Tiger faced much heat after his interview was misinterpreted. For the same, Oprah recalled the then young gun’s words, reminding everyone that his thoughts were not claims of the present, but a thing of the past, when he was a child.
