Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson competed in a head-to-head match-play golf challenge back in 2019. The unofficial PGA Tour competition included a $9 million winner’s purse, held at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nevada.
To raise the stakes, both Hall of Famers made a number of side bets ahead of the match, with Mickelson placing a $200k bet on himself making a birdie on the opening hole. Much to Woods’ joy, Lefty missed and received a hilarious response from the 15-time Major Champion.

When the game began, Mickelson was only 9 feet shy of making a birdie on his opening hole, which would have won the opening wager. However, a poorly timed shot cost him the chance to cash in on his rapid 6-figure wager.
Tiger Woods was captured on camera exclaiming, “That hurts the pocket,” as soon as the shot missed the hole. Additionally, after winning the wager, the 15-time Major champion could not conceal his smile after pocketing a quick $200k. Being so close yet so far, it surely must have hurt Lefty’s pocket to lose such an enormous amount of money to a bet against his presumed rival!

Mickelson had informed Woods during the promotion for ‘The Match’ that he was confident he would ace his opening hole and wager $100,000 on it. The now-52-year-old seemed incredibly confident in himself.

Mickelson said, “I feel like the first hole is a great hole for me. And I believe — in fact, I’m willing to risk $100,000 that says I birdie the first hole. So that’s how good I feel heading into this match.” But much to everyone’s surprise, Tiger played clever and decided to increase the stakes by doubling the wager. And fortunately enough, the 15-time Major secured the side bet win.
Even though Mickelson lost the game’s opening wager, he went on to win the majority of subsequent side wagers and the main event against Woods. However, Tiger Woods was able to exact retribution the next year.
