Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are two of the most famous names in golf. While one is off on a new journey with Greg Norman’s LIV Golf, the other is quite meticulous about his PGA Tour legacy. Both golfers have helped shape the sport to give it the global recognition it deserves. However, both of them are poles apart when it comes to their belief systems related to the sport.

But who among the two acts as a better role model for upcoming talents? And what separates Tiger Woods from his longtime rival Phil Mickelson?

Tiger Woods vs Phil Mickelson: Who is more inspiring for young golfers?

Tiger Woods and Lefty have had a love-hate relationship since their respective debuts. Woods has won 15 major championships in his career, whereas Mickelson has claimed six majors. However, Mickelson has now put a deliberate stop to his PGA Tour legacy since joining LIV Golf.

Tiger Woods, on the other hand, has been in full support of the PGA Tour despite the humongous amounts offered to the players as well as indirect summons from the former POTUS, Donald Trump. Woods’ fans appreciate the golfer’s stance on the issue and celebrate his idea of sticking to his legacy more than money.

Moreover, Lefty has lost a ton of fans since he has shifted to the new Saudi-backed league. Many of Mickelson’s old fans have now become “haters” and have started trolling him for transitioning to the new league. But this is not the only reason Mickelson has been in controversy. The player also made “reckless” claims about the PGA Tour, which were also condemned by Tiger Woods.

Woods himself has also been in controversies numerous times. But most of those events were related to his personal life and not the game. However, it has been the opposite in Mickelson’s case. Most of the times there have been fingers raised on Mickelson because of something he said or did within the golf world.

Who is the better role model among Woods and Mickelson?

Woods has a total of 82 PGA Tour titles registered under his name, while Mickelson won 45 PGA Tour titles in his career. Woods also has had an upper hand on Lefty when it came to playing together. Both of them were grouped on the PGA Tour where Mickelson shot a lower round 15 times, while Woods made it 19 times. They also tied for four times out of the 38 times they have been grouped.

According to Forbes, Woods topped the list for highest paid athletes for ten years straight. However, the golfer now sits at the fifth position on the same list while Mickelson made it to number one! It happened after Mickelson signed up with the LIV Golf Tour after Norman made him an offer he could not refuse.

In my opinion, Tiger Woods is definitely the better role model. A lot of us would agree with the fact that Woods chose to keep his legacy alive rather than going for the money. However, Mickelson chose to do things a little differently and joined the Saudi-funded league. I also strongly believe that Woods has had a bumpy ride in his personal life. He has also faced a lot of physical challenges on the way to where he stands today. Therefore, he seems to be a better role model for aspiring athletes than Phil Mickelson.

In the end, both golfers have their own set of reasons for their respective decisions. Who do you think should be idolized by the new generation of golfers? Should it be Tiger Woods, who doesn’t care about anything else but the sport? Or should it be Phil Mickelson, who took an upfront opportunity and became the highest-paid golfer in the world?
