However, the bonus amount is not paid straight up in cash. Instead, it is added to the player’s tab as deferred compensation. The FedExCup has a total bonus pool of $35 million, out of which the winner will receive $10 million. But rather than receiving the amount in hand, it will be added to the players’ retirement accounts. Many players, including Tiger Woods, believe that the system needs to be changed.

Woods said, “I think it’s one of the major issues for all of us is that it’s not a true payout. How great would it be…starting at the Tour Championship, that’s all you see is it stacked up there and what you’re playing for. That would create a lot of buzz.” However, other theories suggest that the system is for the long-term benefit of the players themselves. If a player wins a $10 million bonus , he would have 2-3 times the money by his retirement.
