Will the new year bring new opportunities for LIV Golf players? Well, if the final meeting goes well and the merger happens, then, yes, it most probably will! However, not everyone will cеlеbrate the news. Some of the LIV golfers who resigned from the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour to join the Saudi-backed league may have left rеgrеtting their decision.

The resignation from players’ ends means that they will miss out on the opportunity to play in the competitive events of the European Tour and the PGA Tour. Here are the top five LIV golfers who may feel regretful, but the mеrgеr is a donе dеal:

1. Dustin Johnson

After being on the Tour for almost 14 years, DJ resigned his membership in June 2022. His decision came after he joined the Saudi league for allegedly $125 million, and made plans to compete in just the major tournaments and LIV Golf events. While talking about his resignation, Johnson said, For right now, I’ve resigned my membership on the tour.”

In case the merger comes through, and the LIV players are permitted to compete in the Tour events, the former number one would be at a loss, since he no longer holds the PGAT membership.

2. Kеvin Na

After winning five times on the PGA Tour, Na decided in 2022 that his time on the Tour was over. He joined LIV Golf in 2022, after handing in his resignation in June. Citing freedom and the ability to exercise his right as a free agent, he informed the entire golf fraternity about his resignation. To remain a PGA Tour player, I must give up my right to make these choices about my career. If I exercise my right to choose where and when I play golf, then I cannot remain a PGA Tour player without facing disciplinary proceedings and legal action. I am sad to share that I have chosen to resign from the PGA Tour,” said Kevin Na.

After the 31st of December 2023 and the complete layout of the merger details, the 40-year-old will not be able to play in any PGAT event because of his resignation.

3. Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia was one of the most prominent members of the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. After he decided to switch sides, he caught himself in a legal battle with the European Tour. The DPWT had hit his players with fines and suspensions for playing in the conflicting events without seeking permission.

In May this year, Garcia resigned from the DPWT to avoid any additional fine, and as a result, lost his chance to play in any European events after the merger. The 2017 Masters champion will not be able to play in the prestigious Ryder Cup.

4. Ian Poultеr

The Englishman joined LIV Golf in 2022. If the merger continues, just like Garcia, Ian Poulter will also not be able to play in the DPWT events because he also resigned earlier this year from the European Tour. Announcing the players’ resignation from the Tour, the European officials thanked them for their contributions and also pointed out that the resignation was a result of their actions. “Their resignations, however, along with the sanctions imposed upon them, are a consequence of their own choices,” said DPWT authorities.

5. Lee Westwood

The 50-year-old found a new home in LIV Golf after a long and successful career on the PGA Tour. In June 2022, Westwood faced suspension from the PGA Tour for participating in a LIV Golf event. Subsequently, in May 2023, the Europеan Tour made an official announcement stating that Wеstwood had chosen to resign from his membership with the tour.

However, in April 2023, Wеstwood celebrated his 50th birthday, making him eligible to compete in senior golf tournaments. Eager to participate, she applied for entry to the 2023 Senior Open Championship, scheduled for late July. Unfortunately, his plans faced a setback in June, when he was denied entry to the championship due to outstanding fees owed to the European Tour, stemming from breaching conflicting tournament regulations. If the historic merger comes through, Westwood still won’t be able to compete in the events since he resigned.
