5 greatest PGA Championship moments of Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods’s iconic walk with the great golfer

Woods, who turned professional in 1996, appeared for the fourth time at the PGA Championship, but what struck with the fans was his walk with the 5x PGA Championship winner, Jack Nicklaus. In the second round, the Golden Bear walked with Woods in his last appearance. Interestingly, the Big Cat urged the 60-year-old to finish things off the right way. The iconic walk with the great golfer is what left a lifetime memory for the golf world. Even Nicklaus, on his final PGA Championship attempt, shot a round of 71, while Woods shot 67 for a 36-hole lead. Eventually, went on to win the tournament.

The best performance

Woods, who made history by winning two consecutive titles at the PGA Championship in 1999 and 2000, showed a similar victorious feat in 2002 as well. Even though Rich Beem took the title, what left a memory was Woods’s attempt to win. After being five strokes behind in the last five holes, Woods went on to record a historic four-birdie streak. But his attempt fell short of just a stroke for his third victory.

Despite failing to win, his final four birdie spree and a shot on Saturday morning is what earned praise. On Saturday morning, Woods continued his second round due to a delay. On the par-4 18th hole, he shot a drive which ended up on the lip of the bunker. But surprisingly, with the uncomfortable stance and trees as an obstacle, he hit the approach shot that ended up 20 feet away from the hole, leaving everyone amused. His shot earned praise from his fellow Ernie Els. He said, “At 7:30 in the morning, to hit that kind of a shot… crazy.” Even Woods, for his shot, said, “The greatest feeling shot I’ve ever hit in my life.”

12 years as an unbeatable professional

“I could not ask for a better start to my career.” This is what Tiger Woods said after his PGA Championship appearance in 2007. The 31-year-old at that time went on to win his 13th major title with a two-stroke lead over Woody Austin. Being the second most successful player, his victory brought him one win shy of Jack Nicklaus, who had the most wins (5). For his victory, Woods shared, “If you would ask me that 12 years into my career, I would have had this many wins and this many majors, there’s no way. I’ve exceeded my own expectations.”

Medinah win 1999

In the final round, Woods led with a consistent performance. But what left him worrying was the Spaniard, Sergio Garcia, who was chasing down the Big Cat with his five-shot lead. With just a couple of shots to go, the Spaniard reduced the lead from five to one. Woods struggled to improve his lead despite the struggle with the heat and the uneven putting surface. But it was a final putt for par, which could save his victory. Fortunately, he was able to record the greatest par save of his career, leading to a one-stroke victory and his first win at the PGA Championship.

Playoff with Bob May in 2000

To create history, Tiger Woods stepped into defending his title. But ironically, it wasn’t an easy walk for him. Despite his 18-under, 280, he could not clinch his title easily as his fellow Bob May had his performance of a lifetime. The California native also shot the same score, leading to a playoff. But in the playoff, May on the par-4 16th recorded a par, offering Woods a chance for his second consecutive victory. Well, what happened next was nothing less than a delight and a memory of a lifetime. Woods shot a 20-foot right-to-left curler, and as the ball went closer to the hole, the gesture of pointing a finger in the air is what assured the history created.

Woods, with some of the most historic appearances, victories, and shots, has left a memory for a lifetime. Even though he is missing the major this year, these memories still feel fresh for the entire golf community. Which one is your favorite? Share with us in the comments below.
