‘Turned Their Back on Tiger Woods’: Reputed Golf Analyst Drops Bold Words About LIV Golf Defectors

LIV Golf Invitational Series is the new golf league backed by the Saudi Arabian government-funded PIF. The PGA Tour consider the 54-hole Series their rivals, and thus, many players, including Tiger Woods, have chosen not to join them. On the contrary, many other players have signed with the Tour rival.
“They’ve turned their back on Tiger Woods,” the former pro-golfer turned golf analyst Curtis Strange said. He revealed his thoughts about the LIV Golf Series when he appeared as a guest on the ‘Starter with Taylor Zarzour’ show on SiriusXM radio.

“It’s just annoying that the game that not only do I respect and love so much,” he added. “It’s the players that came before me and who paved the way. I just think we owe them more than this.”
Why Tiger Woods didn’t sign with LIV Golf?
According to the LIV CEO and former world no. 1 Greg Norman, the company had proposed a $700-$800 million offer to Woods. However, he turned down the offer. “That’s where (on PGA Tour) my legacy is,” he had revealed his reason for it.

Turned professional in 1996, Tiger Woods has won 100+ titles worldwide, including the 15 majors and 18 World Golf Championships, on the PGA Tour. Furthermore, he still holds many records on the PGA Tour, like the player with most consecutive cuts (142), and most winning percentage, (22.9%).
Many players, including Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, have chosen to follow Woods’ path and stay with the PGA Tour for its legacy. However, many went against him and the Tour and accepted hefty contracts to play for the Saudi-backed league.

Phil Mickelson, a 6-time major champion, was one of the first players to openly support and sign with the new LIV Golf Invitational Series. Reportedly, he received approximately $200 million to do so.
Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Brooks Koepka are some of the other prominent players to join the league. According to reports, they have all received offers closing to $100+ million from LIV Golf. Notably, accepting the money from the league sponsors has helped many of them to earn their spots on Forbes’ highest-paid golfers in the 2022 list.
