It’s a major championship week, and we are all geared up for a thrilling showdown at Erin Hills. The pressure is mounting as the 80th U.S. Women’s Open kicks off on Thursday morning with eight former champions and 24 of the top 25 players in the world. The players will tee off at Erin Hills for the first time and will be ready to have their skills and nerves tested on this daunting ‘bombers’ course,’ playing at 6,829 yards for the week.
Already infamous for its challenging layout, the weather predictions are not in favor either, with some chances of scattered showers and thunder predicted. While the course, which hosted the 2017 U.S. Open on the PGA Tour, is drawing attention for its challenges, the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open is also drawing attention for its star-studded player field.

Tee off No. 1 Thursday/No. 10 Friday at Erin Hills
The field comprising 156 players includes defending champion Yuka Saso, who will be chasing her third U.S. Women’s Open title, claiming the first two in 2021 and 2024, respectively. But fans are eager to keep an eye on one of the most anticipated groups — a powerhouse trio comprising Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, and Charley Hull. World No.1 Nelly Korda, who is yet to secure a victory this year, unlike her six titles by this time last season, is yet to claim her first U.S. Women’s Open title. The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open saw Korda struggle to make the cut, finishing 10 over par for the first two days.
Teeing up with Korda for the first two days of the major Championship, Lexi Thompson had a phenomenal finish at the Chevron Championship in April. Thompson is known for her power game and has not let her competitive spirit fade, making her a possible contender for the title. Joining these two will be English professional Charley Hull, often known for her aggressive play and resilience, who came very close to claiming the title in 2023.
The players will tee off at 7:45 am (Eastern Daylight Time; 6:45 am local) from two tees, Tee 1 and Tee 10, and only the top 60 and ties will progress into the weekend. The players who tee off from Tee 1 for the first round will be teeing off from Tee 10 on the second round. The groupings remain the same, with just swaps in timings, where groups teeing off early in Round 1 will tee off later in Round 2.

Now that we have looked at the pairings, let’s see how exactly these tee times are determined and who decides the pairings.
How groupings and tee-times are determined at the U.S. Women’s Open
The standard procedure of allotting tee-times and groupings is done by the tournament committee for every event. While some players would want to tee off early and be done with their round so they have enough time to rest before the next day, some like getting in those couple of minutes of extra sleep and prefer to tee off later. But it is not up to the players to pick and choose, and this is usually decided by the tournament officials for the first two rounds. The groupings for the first two rounds are usually random and not always based on merit, giving players a chance for players to interact with everyone on tour.

Usually, players who tee off early on the first day are swapped on the next day and are made to play in the later tee times. Post two rounds with players making the cut, the tee-times are then decided based on scores, with top scorers and featured groups teeing off later. This is usually the procedure followed for a standard stroke play event, and with featured groups, is done based on player rankings and recent performances, to create a compelling grouping that can resonate with fans and broadcasters.
