The eagerly anticipated LIV Golf Adelaide event in Australia kicked off this week. Following a three-week hiatus after the Masters, where 13 LIV stars played (with eight making it to the weekend), the Saudi-sponsored circuit is back with its enormous $25 million prize pool.

While many expected the defending champion Talor Gooch or even the Aussie star Cam Smith to grab the win this week, that was far from the reality. At the event that ended just minutes ago, Gooch secured a meager T26, while the Australian settled for a T14 finish. On the contrary, the show’s star was an unexpected one.

Brendan Steele, who’s part of Phil Mickelson‘s HyFlyers GC, grabbed the win with a stunning 18-under par, 198 across the three days. The massive $4 million cut of the purse is now his to claim. South African legends Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel put up a great fight too on Sunday. The pair carded 7 and 8 under-par rounds on the final day to rise to the 2nd and 3rd spots on the leaderboard, respectively. Oosthuizen will take home $2.25 million, while Schwartzel will receive a check for $1.5 million.

In LIV Golf’s no-cut format, players who place much lower in the standings still receive sizable rewards. This is evident with the last person on the leaderboard in the Adelaide event’s case, Anthony Kim (who, despite a good start, faltered on the final day shooting a 7-over par) cashing in a cool $50,000!

LIV’s USP is its teams! And for all its events, in addition to the individual champion being crowned, a team wins too! Of the whopping $25 million purse, $5 million is exclusive to the team prizes. The leaders, who this week were none other than the full Australian team Ripper GC, take home $3 million (split 4 ways).

The runner-up team receives $1.5 million. And thanks to Louis Oosthuizen and Schwartzel’s superb Sunday run, it will be the full South African team, Stinger GC, who will cash that check. Interestingly, the first and second-place team finishes this week were decided by a playoff (LIV Golf’s first-ever team playoff) thanks to both initially securing 53-under overall. Needless to say, the Aussies triumphed.

Brendan Steele, too, will get an additional $125K (his share of his team’s win) this week thanks to HyFlyers GC placing third and taking the remaining $500,000 of the team purse. It clearly was more than a fruitful day for the leaders—both placement and money-wise!
