Tiger Woods will not be competing in THE PLAYERS Championship in 2024. This decision might be because he wishes to prepare for the upcoming Masters and be in his best health. During his last professional appearance at the Genesis Invitational, he had to withdraw from the game due to influenza. His abrupt withdrawal left the fans waiting yet again to catch the Woods magic.

Tiger Woods’s legendary 2001 THE PLAYERS victory

Regarded as the fifth major of the men’s golf, THE PLAYERS has not always been a greatest stage for Tiger Woods. Debuting in 1997, he has been able to capture the top spot only twice out of the 18 times he competed. In his first two years in the tournament, he was not even in the top-10. It was only in his fourth year, that is 2000, that he finally scored below par and finished at T2. He, sadly, lost the top spot by just one stroke.

When he finally won the championship in 2001, it seemed as if he was at the top of his game. The game was remembered for his “better than most” putt; words were immortalized by NBA commentator Gary Koch, who said them three times in awe of Woods’s legendary putt. He shot 14 over and, remembered it as “one of the most iconic moments of my career.”

The GOAT’s journey at THE PLAYERS is also marked by moments of adversity, including withdrawals in 2010 and 2011 and instances where he did not place within the top 50. Before the 2013 Players Championship, Tiger Woods had doubts about his ability to perform well at TPC Sawgrass. Since his victory in 2001, he hadn’t managed to place higher than eighth, which might be considered as a disappointing streak, until 2013.

The win in 2013, with him finishing 13-under-par and earning a $1,710,000 prize, served as a reaffirmation of his enduring excellence. In the final round, he was tied alongside Sergio Garcia and Lingmerth. He recovered from the double bogey he had hit at the par-4 14th hole by hitting a birdie at the par-5 16th. He made back-to-back par shots to claim his fourth win of the season.
