Matchplay tournaments like the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup are thrilling because they bring out the emotions and drama inherent in the format. In fourball or fourball better ball, a pair of golfers from one team plays against a pair from the opposing team, each using their own ball. Whoever hits the better shot will use that ball for the next shot.

In this format, the pairing of the golfers is important as they need to complement each other as players. If one is a good driver, the other needs to be strong in the short game. The decision falls to team captains Jim Furyk and Mike Weir. The fourball will be played in the first session of the first day, this Thursday.

Who are the toughest competitors in the Presidents Cup?

The Americans are favorites going into the tournament, but there are big names and some dark horses on the International team as well. Xander Schauffele is the lynchpin of Team USA. He has a 6-3 record in the tournament and has won two majors this year. Scottie Scheffler is likely the most dangerous player for the Internationals. Their strategy to deal with him is unclear, but they will be hoping Sungjae Im and Tom Kim can keep him from finding his rhythm.

On the International side, their top-ranked player, Hideki Matsuyama, will surely play a significant role. He has a 7-10-5 record in the tournament and has been playing some excellent golf this year. Sungjae Im will also be a key factor for Team International. He has a winning record of 5-3-2 and will face the World No. 1 in his first match on Thursday.
