The T-Mobile Match Play is one of the unique events on the women’s circuit. The LPGA Tour returned to Shadow Creek after a year with a new format of match play and they have elevated the prize purse for this event. Instead of playing on a larger field on the final day, only two golfers will battle it out for the silverware and million-dollar prize purse of the elevated event. The tournament is expected to have 96 players

This year, the two golfers under the spotlight are world number one Nelly Korda and Irish golfer Leona Maguire. The two finessed through the quarterfinals and semi-finals to face each other on Sunday. So, what will be the prize money Korda or Maquire take home this Sunday at Shadow Creeks?

The tournament will take place for 4 days. On the final day, it will be a single-elimination match-play bracket- Championship Match. Since last year, the prize money for the match play has increased by $500,000. Hence, compared to last year, where Pajaree Anannarukarun defeated Ayaka Furue and walked away with a $225,000 check, this year’s victor will receive more.

This year the prize purse is $2 million, the same as last week’s event [the FORD Championship] in Arizona. Of this, the winner stands to receive $300,00 with 500 CME Globe points for the Race to CME rankings, which will be used for the season-ending championship. Those who made the first cut of the 36-hole on Thursday will then receive the remaining prize money.

The two contenders are up for huge things as they make a run for the T-Mobile Match Play title. While it will end Maguire’s nine months of a winless run, Nelly Korda will card her name among the greats if she wins the event.

Nelly Korda to tie 27-time LPGA Tour winner Lorena Ochoa

Nelly Korda resumed her 2024 LPGA Tour schedule after taking seven weeks off from the Tour and returned to join the field at the Fir Hill Seri Pak Championship. Fresh off the vacation, Korda earned her second title of the season and the 10th of her LPGA Tour career. She followed that with another victory at the Ford Championship in her fourth season.

Korda, now an 11th-time LPGA Tour winner, has won three titles in three starts, and at the T-Mobile Match Play, she is up to match history. The 35-year-old, if she wins in Shadow Creek, will become the only golfer, after Lorena Ochoa did in 2008, to win in four consecutive starts on the LPGA Tour. The longest streak was made by Nancy Lopez (1978) and equaled by Annika Sorenstam in 2004–05.

With the speed Korda has been moving, she may soon match even Sorenstam and Lopez, but that will be a bit harder as after the match play she will be playing the first major, the Chevron Championship. Will Korda make history in Shadow Creek, or will Leona Maguire win her third LPGA title? Stay tuned to find out.
