The 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is remembered for many wrong reasons because of the harsh conditions. “Not my favorite thing to see,” is what Stacy Lewis said, highlighting the challenges players faced because of the high temperature, strong winds, and tricky hole locations. A similar situation is unfolding at the Qizhong Garden Golf Club, and 2x LPGA champ Leona Maguire is not happy at all.

While the challenges at the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship were mostly because of the weather, the organizers are to blame for the mismanagement at Qizhong Garden Golf Club. Leona, who is on the course for her practice sessions, has shared some interesting images in her story. The story features the image of the venue shared by the management on Instagram, along with an image in a mini-frame captioned “Instagram vs reality 😂”

The reality image shows patches on the green, right around the hole. Fried Egg Golf contributor Meg Adkins took a screenshot of the story and shared it on X and wrote, “Not a good look for this week’s LPGA venue in Shanghai (via Leona Maguire IG).”

The 2023 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give winner is not someone to post about such things. On the contrary, she is known for her positive outlook on the game and life. Remember the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, which was cancelled because of heavy rains. The decision to cancel the event disappointed many golfers, including Alison Lee, who could have bagged her first title. However, Maguire still viewed it in a positive light.

“We saw videos from the golf course, and there was really nothing the tour could do. We saw videos from it the following Wednesday, and it was actually worse. I played some really great golf, was sitting pretty after the first day, and that was it. You can just take the positives from it and know I played really well and obviously been playing some nice golf leading into that in the second half of the season,” Maguire said.

She was certainly on the right path and could have won her 3rd LPGA title. After Round 1, Leona was tied at 3, only for the tournament to be abandoned. If she posted the story despite her general positive outlook, it speaks volumes. Both the LPGA and the golf course’s management team are to be blamed here.

The LPGA should have selected a better golf course with well-maintained fairways, greens, and bunkers. Similarly, green staff should have started well in advance to prepare for the event. Early preparations would have helped identify and address any wear and tear issues.

There’s still a day for the tournament scheduled from October 9 to October 12, 2026. The green staff still has a day to take some necessary actions to manage the issue. Golfers will play for a $2.20 million purse and 500 CME points to be distributed among top performers. However, Leona Maguire will also be aiming for her chance in the 2026 Solheim Cup.

Leona Maguire is aiming for the Solheim Cup 2026

Maguire has played in 3 Solheim Cups in 2021, 2023, and 2024. She was part of the European team that won in 2021 and then in 2023. In fact, her 2021 debut was historic. She managed to set a record for the most successful rookie performance. In her 5 matches, she scored a whopping 4.5 points to help Team Europe clinch a win.

Overall, her Solheim Cup record is very strong. Of 12, she has won 8, lost only 3, and tied 1. This comes to a 70.8% points win percentage, and an undefeated 3-0 record in singles. But despite her amazing performances, the 2024 event saw a less active role for her.

She was disappointed by 2024 captain Suzann Pettersen’s decision to sit her out in 3 sessions. Although she had to accept the decision back then, Leona is eyeing her fourth appearance in the 2026 Solheim Cup.

“The goal for these last four or five events is to put myself into contention as much as I can, and if I get over the line, great, if not, we will put in some good work over the off-season and try to hit the ground running as quickly as we can next season,” she said to The Irish Times.

Currently, she ranks 81st in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. She also stands at 25 in the Solheim Cup 2026 rankings. There’s a lot she has to do to make it to the Solheim Cup automatic qualifications. Rising in the world rankings is her best route. However, if things don’t work out, a possible captain’s pick from Anna Nordqvist could be a goal for the future.

With her focus now on earning a place in the 2026 Solheim Cup, she’s channeling her energy toward proving why she remains one of golf’s fiercest competitors.
