Phil had plenty of nicknames, like ‘Lefty’ owing to th fact that he is a left-handed golfer, and ‘Phil the Thrill’ for his thrilling style of play.

However, not everyone is a Mickelson fan. There are a few haters who’ve given him the nickname, ‘Figjam.’ Meanwhile, most of these haters were his fellow tour pros. Despite that, people and the media considered him the most approachable golfer on tour in 2016. But what is the origin story of ‘Figjam’?

How did Phil Mickelson get the nickname ‘Figjam’

Phil Mickelson has been a prominent golfer since his debut on the PGA Tour in the early 1990s. He had the swag and a goofy grin that made him a fan favorite. However, his non-serious behavior was mistaken for insincerity by a few fellow tour pros, especially his seniors. And it was those PGA Tour pros who named him ‘Figjam.’

Meanwhile, ‘Figjam’ is an acronym that begins with obscene language. “F**k, I’m good, just ask me.” However, no one uses this nickname these days. But this nickname wasn’t popular, as fans never considered him an arrogant or cocky guy.

Moreover, fans were unaware of this nickname until 2006. Additionally, they even named Phil one of the top 10 most hated athletes, and it shocked everyone to see his name on this list. But a tour pro reportedly said, “They don’t know him the way we do. He annoys everybody.” Hence, they believe Mickelson’s inclusion in the list was good.

But with the increase in seniority on the PGA Tour, the views of most of his colleagues changed. And Phil was one of the most likable golfers on the PGA Tour.

However, this tag did not last long as his comments about the PGA Tour went viral. The golfer also joined the Saudi-backed rival LIV Golf Invitational Series league, for which he faced plenty of criticism.
