Many are well aware of Phelps’ mastery when it comes to swimming. The 23 Olympic gold medals speak for themselves. However, not many have knowledge of the American swimmer’s golf skills. Having a golf handicap of 10, Phelps is an avid golfer and shares the love and passion for the sport like many others.
Back in 2018, Tiger Woods was closing in to win the PGA Championship, ending his decade-long Major win drought. However, Brooks Koepka spoilt Tiger’s party, to win his 3rd Major title in 2 years. Nonetheless, Phelps didn’t let Woods’ defeat become the main topic, as he had some high appreciation for the Hall of Famer.
The atmosphere around Tiger Woods’ is different, says Phelps
In Tiger’s final round at Bellerive, Michael Phelps followed the golfer from hole to hole along with the huge crowd. However, the Swimmer used this opportunity to learn from the golfing legend how to make a comeback from injury. Woods was nine months into his return after 11 months of layoff for his back issues.

Similar to Tiger, Phelps also had an absence from his sports after retiring from swimming following the 2012 London Olympics. Nonetheless, he returned back to the sport in 2014 and won five gold medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics. “You know how to do it, right? We both know how to do it,” said Phelps, after watching Tiger Woods play the final round. “We’ve been at that level for an extended period of time. You kind of know what to do in this environment but it’s hard to find it”.

Phelps then emphasized how he was well aware of techniques for swimming but was worried about his body. He said, “For me, I knew how to swim, I knew how to do the strokes and turns but it’s getting my hip rotation — it’s getting all those fine details just ironed out. And it’s going take time when you step away from any sport”.

The Olympic Gold medalist then gave Woods his props for being able to make a comeback despite all his struggles. Phelps said, “The fact that he’s able to be where he is now with where the game is today and it’s — it just makes the game so much better. Having him in the mix is truly incredible.”
